Okinawa, Japan — Students at Lester Middle School recently turned up the heat in the science lab — and the kitchen — with a unique and engaging project led by 8th grade science teacher Mrs. Andrea Anza. The project, titled “Bake It ‘Til You Make It,” blended culinary creativity with scientific inquiry, challenging students to explore the chemistry behind their favorite baked goods.

As part of the unit on elements, compounds, and chemical and physical reactions, students selected a recipe and investigated the science behind each ingredient. Then, they modified one ingredient they believed would have the most significant impact on the final product. After baking both the original and altered versions, students brought their creations — and their scientific observations — to class.

The twist? Their classmates had to use their detective skills and scientific knowledge to identify the mystery ingredient in Version B. The classroom buzzed with excitement as students tasted, tested, and theorized, applying what they had learned throughout the unit in a hands-on, delicious way.

“This project was a fantastic way to wrap up our unit,” said Mrs. Anza. “It encouraged critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity — all while making science fun and memorable.”

The “Bake It ‘Til You Make It” project is just one example of how Lester Middle School continues to inspire curiosity and a love of learning in its students.
