Students enrolled in Strategic Literacy at Lester Middle School, taught by Dr. Cara Kaiser, recently enjoyed a lively and educational field trip to the MCCS Camp Foster Library. The day was packed with hands-on activities, new discoveries, and plenty of inspiration to keep reading and learning.

The visit was divided into three exciting breakout sessions; each designed to spark curiosity and build skills:

Library Tour & Career Exploration Students kicked off their visit with a guided tour of the library’s unique spaces, including the music room, the Innovation Lab, and the main library area. Along the way, they asked thoughtful questions about how the library works and what it’s like to be a librarian or library technician. The tour gave students a behind-the-scenes look at how libraries support creativity, research, and community.

Reading Dragons & Read Aloud Next, students were introduced to Reading Dragons—a brand-new reading incentive program where students earn collectible, Pokémon-style cards by tracking their reading. Each student received a starter kit with a reading tracker and three cards to begin their journey. The program runs through April, with new cards released monthly. To kick things off, students listened to a 15-minute book excerpt, which counted toward their first reading milestone. Just 15 more minutes on their own, and they’re ready to earn their first card!

Libby App & Library Card Sign-Ups In the final session, students learned how to use Libby, a free app that lets them borrow eBooks and audiobooks from the library. Half of each group signed up for their own library cards while the other half explored how Libby works then they switched so everyone got a chance to do both. By the end of the session, students were equipped to access books anytime, anywhere.

This field trip gave Lester Middle School students a fresh look at how the MCCS Camp Foster Library can support their learning, creativity, and love of reading. With new tools in hand and stories waiting to be discovered, students left energized and ready to dive into their next book adventure!
