Eighth graders take learning outside the classroom with epic Okinawa adventure

OKINAWA, Japan – Eighth graders at Lester Middle School recently traded their desks and textbooks for the great outdoors during an unforgettable two-day study trip. The excursion took students across Okinawa, allowing them to bridge the gap between classroom concepts and hands-on, real-world experiences.

The journey began with a sobering and powerful visit to the Peace Memorial Park. As students walked the grounds, they made real-life connections to the local Okinawan community that was deeply impacted during World War II. It was a moment of reflection that brought the history lessons they’d been studying all year into a very real and human perspective. 

Next up, the eighth graders headed to Forest Adventure for a crash course in science. Safely harnessed in the treetops, students experienced the concepts of kinetic energy, gravity, and physical forces firsthand. Ziplining and navigating obstacle courses proved to be the perfect way to see how energy and forces work outside the confines of a science lab. 

Day two shifted the focus to the local environment and how we can make a positive human impact on our surroundings. Students partnered with the Churamura Okinawa Coastal Protection non-profit, learning about the fragile local sea turtle population. The highlight for many was getting their hands sandy and learning the ropes to become official sea turtle nest excavators. It was an incredible lesson in wildlife conservation and community responsibility.

The trip wrapped up with a deep dive into local heritage at Murasaki Mura. Students fully immersed themselves in traditional Japanese and Okinawan handicraft cultural experiences. From painting to traditional weaving, everyone had the chance to create their own cultural keepsake to remember the trip by.

The two-day excursion was a massive hit among the eighth-grade class. A huge thank you to the teachers, chaperones, and local organizations who made this fantastic learning experience possible for Lester Middle School.
